How peer influence shapes value computation in moral decision-making

چکیده
Moral behavior is susceptible to peer influence. How does information from peers influence moral preferences? We used drift-diffusion modeling show that changes the value of by prioritizing choice attributes align with peers' goals. Study 1 ( N = 100; preregistered) showed participants accurately inferred goals prosocial and antisocial when observing their decisions. In 2 68), made decisions before after a or peer. Peer observation caused participants' own preferences resemble those peers. This effect on computation manifested as an increased weight promoting occurred independently initial bias. Participants' self-reported awareness tracked more closely computational measures than Our findings have implications for bolstering blocking effects behavior.

The influence of identifiability and singularity in moral decision making
There is an increased willingness to help identified individuals rather than non-identified, and the effect of identifiability is mainly present when a single individual rather than a group is presented. However, identifiability and singularity effects have thus far not been manipulated orthogonally. The present research uses a joint evaluation approach to examine the relative contribution of i...
متن کاملInfluence of the cortical midline structures on moral emotion and motivation in moral decision-making.
The present study aims to examine the relationship between the cortical midline structures (CMS), which have been regarded to be associated with selfhood, and moral decision making processes at the neural level. Traditional moral psychological studies have suggested the role of moral self as the moderator of moral cognition, so activity of moral self would present at the neural level. The prese...
متن کاملMoral Decision Making with ACORDA
This paper shows how moral decisions can be drawn computationally by using ACORDA, a working implementation of prospective logic programming. ACORDA is employed to model moral dilemmas, as they are able to prospectively look ahead at the consequences of hypothetical moral judgments. With this knowledge of consequences, moral rules are then used to decide the appropriate moral judgments. The who...
متن کاملAnalogy and Moral Decision Making
It is well known that analogy plays an important role in the process of decision making. However, this role has not yet been systematically examined in the domain of moral decision making. This paper investigates the role of cultural narratives in understanding novel moral situations. We examine whether the processes by which core cultural narratives are applied in people’s lives follow the pri...
متن کاملPubertal Development and Peer Influence on Risky Decision Making
Adolescents engage in more risky behavior when they are with peers and show, on average, heightened susceptibility to peer influence relative to children and adults. However, individual differences in susceptibility to peer influence are not well understood. The current study examined whether the effect of peers on adolescents’ risky decision making was moderated by pubertal status. Participant...
